In 2003, construction began on a new 343,000 ft2 five-storey facility consolidating all hospital and clinical services into one location. Bloorview brings together multiple functions: part hospital, part community resource, part research centre and part education centre. Building functions include 75-bed in-patient care, specialized clinics, administration offices, laboratories, public assembly areas, recreation (public swimming pool), school classrooms and cafeteria/restaurant.
Each of these functions has different requirements in terms of hours of operation, outdoor air ventilation rates and air containment. One of the key design challenges was to consolidate such a diverse range of programs in one building, together with the necessity of continuing operations of the existing facility on the same site.
